SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Sophomore Elaina Mellott tied her career low round, firing an 88 to lead the Taylor women's golf team on day one of the Battle at Blackthorn hosted by Bethel College at Blackthorn Country Club.
Mellott fired a 46 on her opening nine but closed with a 6-over par 42 on the final nine to post the Trojans' low score for the day. Freshman Brittany Pfaff also turned in a strong performance in her first collegiate round, going out in 45 before stumbling slightly to finish with a 50 on the back nine for a score of 95.
The final three players in Taylor's lineup struggled to find their rhythm as sophomore Erin Erickson finished with a 111, freshman Alexa Gum added a 129, and junior Marisa Williamson added a 132. Taylor's team score of 423 was in 12th place in the 12 team field that features two teams ranked in the preseason Top-25.
Indiana Tech leads the event after day one with a team score of 322 while the hosts from Bethel are one stroke back at 323.
The second and final round is slated to begin with a shotgun start at noon tomorrow.
