UPLAND, Ind. - The Taylor women's tennis team kicked off the fall season Friday on its home courts, but Cardinal Stritch prevailed with a 9-0 win over the Trojans.
With both the Taylor men and the women competing at the same time, the women started their match with singles play while the men began with doubles. On this day, Cardinal Stritch was too strong for the Trojans
Sophomore Katherine Marquez, an All-Crossroads League performer last year, played No. 1 singles for Taylor and was defeated by the score of 6-3, 6-3.
The rest of the Taylor singles lineup in its first match consisted of senior Kelsey Chow, who was placed at the No. 2 singles spot. Junior Rachel Kammer was at No. 3 singles, followed by two freshmen playing in their first collegiate match in Betsy Jones and Seven Wieland slotted at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. MacKenzie Bedor competed in the final spot at No. 6.
In doubles action, Chow and Marquez played the No. 1 spot and earned three games in an 8-3 defeat. Jones and Kammer played No. 2, while Wieland and freshman Annika Zeilstra rounded out the lineup at the No. 3 position and were edged 8-5.
Taylor (0-1) will be back on the courts tomorrow at Marian University for the Marian Doubles Tournament, scheduled to begin at 9:00 am.
