HARTFORD CITY, Ind. – Taylor's Elaine Schmeltz has been named the Crossroads League's Women's Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Schmeltz enjoyed a stellar day for the Trojans at the Anderson Invitational on Saturday, winning the 3,000 meter run and leading off for TU's victorious Distance Medley Relay team.
The senior from Laville, Ind., posted a blistering time of 10:25.75 to claim a win in the 3,000 meter run, edging second place (Taylor's Alex Berends) by nearly 13 seconds, and hitting the automatic qualification standard for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in March.
Schmeltz ran the leadoff leg for TU's Distance Medley Relay team, which included Courtney Thompson, Sarina Oleson, and Alex Berends, and helped the Trojans to a dominant victory while also hitting the National Championship automatic qualification mark with a time of 12:24.02.
This marks the third consecutive week a TU runner has been honored as the women's track athlete of the week by the Crossroads League. Schmeltz joins Anna Meyer (Feb. 2) and Allison Steinbeck (Jan. 26) as previous winners of the honor this season.
Schmeltz and the Trojans are back in action this weekend when TU travels to the Hoosier Invitational at Indiana University in Bloomington.
