EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Taylor women's tennis team played its first match of the spring season Saturday, and the University of Southern Indiana proved to be too much for the Trojans in a 9-0 defeat.
The Screaming Eagles are a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and currently are in the non-conference schedule of their primary spring season. With the win over Taylor, Southern Indiana won its third straight match and improved to 7-2 dating back to the fall season.
Katherine Marquez played the top spot for the Trojans in singles play, falling by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Sarah Smith, who returns for the spring season after studying abroad in Ecuador last fall, was slotted at No. 2 singles and played well in the first set before being overcome 6-4, 6-0. Rachel Kammer played No. 3 singles and battled in a well-played 6-2, 6-4 match, while Ashlen Nisley competed at No. 4 singles and was defeated by Southern Indiana's Kymberly Brannon 6-2, 6-2.
Marquez and Smith were the only Trojan doubles team to earn a game, as Southern Indiana dictated much of the play on its home courts.
