PITTSBURGH – The Taylor volleyball team split a pair of five set matches during the final day of the Point Park Tournament on Saturday. The Trojans squandered a 2-0 lead in a five set loss to West Liberty State before rallying from a 2-0 deficit in a five-set victory over the hosts from Point Park.

Sophomore hitter Becca Gerig continued her torrid pace at the net with 29 kills on the day, including 13 in the Trojans' loss to West Liberty State and a season-high 16 kills in the win over Point Park.

The Trojans appeared to be cruising for a fourth consecutive victory in Saturday's first match as TU claimed the first set against West Liberty State 25-21 and won the second set 25-23 but WLS rallied with a pair of narrow victories (25-23, 26-24) in sets four and five to force a decisive fifth set. The Trojans once again fell by the slimmest of margins, dropping the fifth set 15-13.

Gerig paced four Trojans in double figure kills with 13 while sophomore Rachel Bouma added 11 and juniors Kelly Arnold and Kayla Springer added ten each. The Trojans utilized a pair of setters in the day's first match with senior Olivia Griffith (18 assists) and freshman Haley Harrell (19 assists) dishing out 37 of the Trojans' 54 assists. TU managed a .242 hitting percentage in the loss while Gerig added ten digs on the TU back row and junior Alex Reel led the team with 15 digs.

After just a few short minutes of rest following the loss the Trojans were back on the court for the final game of the weekend against the hosts from Point Park. TU appeared to be headed for a second consecutive loss after dropping the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-18, but the Trojans managed to rally for a 25-22 win in the third set and a 25-22 victory in set four to force another fifth set. Taylor managed to squeak out a 16-14 victory and complete the comeback to finish the weekend with a 3-1 record.

Gerig was once again impressive with 16 kills on 48 attempts while Bouma finished with eight kills and junior Jessi Arbuckle added seven for TU. The Trojan offense hit at a .117 clip in the victory with Giffith getting all the touches at setter and racking up 33 assists in the win. Reel added ten digs for TU as well.

The Trojans will now begin a ten match run of Crossroads League play starting with a home matchup against Bethel on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
