SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Freshman Raquel Helton fired a round of 81 to pace the Taylor women's golf team on day one of the Battle at Blackthorn on Friday.
The Trojans finished the first day in fifth place in the 14-team field after a round of 344. Along with Helton's 81 the Trojans got an 85 from freshman Elizabeth Jackson and a pair of 89's from sophomore Courtney Feagans and junior Brittany Pfaff. Junior Libby Hansen added a 90 as TU's drop score while freshman Hana Padgett carded a 108 playing as an individual.
Bethel's Katie Holdren leads the individual medalist race after a round of 74 (+2). Helton's 81 was good enough for a tie for seventh place while Jackson is in a tie for 16th in the 70-player field.
Taylor is ahead of fellow Crossroads League foes Spring Arbor (373), Mount Vernon Nazarene (395), and Huntington (428).
The Trojans will be back on the course for the final round of the Battle at Blackthorn on Saturday morning with a shotgun started slated for 8:00 am.
