SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Taylor junior Nick Waskom carded a career best round of 3-under par 69 to power the Taylor men's golf team to the top of the leaderboard after day one of the Battle at Blackthorn on Friday.
Waskom attacked the 7,041-yard, par 72 layout with precision en route to a the lowest score of the day in the field of 61 players. Waskom was joined by TU sophomore Alec Dutkowski as the only other player under par in the first round as Dutkowski birdied his final hole, the par-5 15th to finish at 71.
Junior Trey Turner added a round of 74 while senior Ian Rinken and junior Mitch Lamping each finished with 76's as the Trojans carded a round of 290 (+2) during the opening round of play. Taylor holds an eight shot lead over Saint Francis (Ind.) and a 13 shot advantage over Holy Cross.
Waskom enters Saturday's final round with a two shot advantage over Dutkwoski in the race for individual medalist honors.
Saturday's final round is slated to begin with a 9:00 am shotgun start.
