BELLEVILLE, Ill. – Taylor got a game-saving interception from Dovi Gamble to end the first overtime and countered a Lindenwood field goal with a Wilson Alexander touchdown pass to the corner of the end zone in the second overtime to seal a wild, 48-45, victory on Saturday.
The Trojans opened the game on fire with touchdown passes from Alexander to Kyle Kempton and Daniel Boy for a quick 14-0 lead. Touchdowns from the special teams and defense accounted for TU's next two scores, as Gamble returned a kickoff for a score (watch here) and Ben Rupert picked off a pass and ran it back 21 yards for a touchdown and a 28-21 lead at the half.
Lindenwood fired back with three touchdowns in the final 10 minutes, finally drawing even for the first time in the contest on a touchdown with 24 seconds left in the game to force overtime.
The Lynx stopped TU on its first overtime possession and needed a field goal to win but attempted a pass into the end zone where Gamble picked it off to force a second overtime period.
Taylor held Lindenwood to a field goal to open the second overtime and Alexander connected with Boy on a game-winning touchdown to seal the thrilling, 48-45, TU victory.
Alexander ended the afternoon 17-of-28 for 231 yards and four touchdowns, with Boy catching two of the scores along with one each for Kempton and Lundberg.
The TU defense picked up four sacks, nine tackles for negative yardage and three takeaways in the win, led by Austan Shope's six stops, two tackles for a loss and one sack. Stanley Gilbert added seven hits and 1.5 stops for a loss, while Ben Rupert, Cameron Gray and Josh Lamica each recorded one sack.
Jeremy Ramirez notched a fumble recovery, with Gamble and Rupert pulling down the two interceptions. Rupert returned his for a pick-six score and added four tackles to go with the sack, while Gamble added the special teams score with the kickoff return to the end zone.
Taylor (4-6, 2-4 MSFA) will close its season on November 12 against Trinity International (3-7, 1-4 MSFA) in a 1:00 pm start inside Turner Stadium. The Trojans will honor their seniors prior to the start of the game.
