CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – After taking a 7-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, the Taylor University softball team withstood six runs over the final three frames by No. 12 Campbellsville to secure a 7-6 upset victory on Friday.

The 12th-ranked Tigers (4-4) had the bases loaded with two outs in the home half of the seventh with a chance to complete the comeback, but Maddie Cornell forced a groundball for the final out to preserve the win for TU.

Taylor opened the scoring with a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. Emily Thompson led off the contest by reaching base on an error and came around to score on Lauren Ehle's single. Cassie Kuizin crossed home plate on Courtney Moriarty's single to round out the first-inning scoring.

In the second stanza, the Trojans plated their first run after three-straight singles by Briley Spencer, Jessie Britt and Emily Thompson, the last of which drove in Spencer to make it a 3-0 TU lead. Anna Gunderson followed the string of singles with a double, bringing in the fourth Trojan run of the afternoon.

Neither team was able to get on the board in the third inning, but Kuizin stole second base and scored on Ehle's single to add another run to Taylor's lead in the top of the fourth.

Two more Trojans came across home plate in the fifth inning, as Gunderson's single with the bases loaded plated Spencer and Davis Carter, giving TU their final two runs of the day and a 7-0 lead.

Campbellsville's first run of the game came on a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the fifth, slightly trimming the lead to 7-1.

CU made its biggest move in the sixth frame, scoring four runs off of a two-run double and a two-run home run to pull within two, trailing 7-5 entering the final inning.

The Tigers scored a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 7-6 with two outs in the seventh, followed by a walk that loaded the bases, before Cornell forced a ground out to give the Trojans the highest-ranked win in head coach Brad Bowser's seven years at the helm of the program.

Gunderson led the Taylor attack, going 3-for-4 at the dish and driving in three runs. Ehle, Moriarty, Carmichael and Spencer each produced two hits apiece for the Trojans in the upset.

Cornell earned the win from the circle for Taylor, helping TU avenge an 11-1 defeat in the first game of the doubleheader.

Taylor (5-2) will return to the diamond on Saturday, squaring off at No. 8 Lindsey Wilson (6-2) in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm.
