GULF SHORES, Ala. – Harry Dantona, Benjamin Byrd and Mitchell Herrington kicked off the action for the Taylor men's track and field team at the 2017 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships on Thursday with a trio of top-20 performances.
Dantona opened the competition for the men's squad with a toss of 168-08.75 in the hammer throw. The mark was Dantona's second-best of the season and closed the senior's career with an 18th-place finish in the event.
Byrd followed for TU with a time of 3:58.42 to finish 16th in the 1,500-meter run. The mark was not enough to advance Byrd into the finals but was good for the third-fastest time of the season for Taylor.
Herrington closed the schedule for the Trojans by taking 19th in the javelin with a toss of 158-02.00.
Joseph Beamish had also been scheduled to compete on Thursday, but the trials of the steeplechase were scratched, advancing Beamish automatically into Saturday's finals.
No. 23 Taylor will have three more individuals in action on Friday, with Caleb Anthony, Leslie Romer and Matt Hall all set to compete at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium. Anthony will get things started in the 110-meter hurdles at 2:45 pm (ET), with Romer taking the track at 4:10 pm (ET) in the 100-meter dash and Hall closing the day in the 5,000-meter run under the lights at 8:00 pm (ET).
