UPLAND, Ind. – The Crossroads League announced this week that Taylor's Seth Mikel has been named Sports Information Director of the Year. The SID-of-the-Year award is voted on by the ten Sports Information Directors within the Crossroads League.
The award is the second of Mikel's career, as he was also named Crossroads League Sports Information Director of the Year following the 2014-2015 school year.
"It is certainly an honor to share this recognition with our staff of Kyle Condon, Cameron Andry, Rick Johnston and our group of talented student-workers," said Mikel. "I am thankful for their contributions and am grateful to Kyle Gould, Amy Stucky and the TU administration for their strong support of Sports Information here at Taylor. We are blessed to be able to cover the outstanding student-athletes and coaches here at Taylor, while working alongside so many talented and hard-working SIDs from around the Crossroads League."
Mikel started at Taylor as the Sports Information Director in March of 2013 and was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director for Communications in the spring of 2015. Mikel serves on the Taylor Athletics Department's Leadership Team and is responsible for the promotion and marketing of TU's 18 varsity sports, while also overseeing two assistant positions, numerous student workers and the department's Trojan Sports Network.
"I am excited to see Seth honored by his peers with this prestigious award," said Taylor Athletics Director Kyle Gould. "His detailed approach to his work combined with his tireless work ethic and ability to organize our Sports Information Department allow our programs and student-athletes to be promoted and showcased with excellence. We are blessed to have him at Taylor."
During the winter season, Mikel successfully spearheaded the promotion, coverage and video distribution of the 20th-annual Ivanhoe's Silent Night basketball game, with the highlight video garnering over 100,000 views on YouTube and the SnapChat Live Story being watched over one million times worldwide.
Mikel also delivered on-site coverage of the TU men's basketball team's run to the Round of 16 at the NAIA National Tournament in March, while adding off-site coverage of Taylor's nine other national-tournament qualifiers throughout the 2016-2017 year.
Over the course of the school year, the Trojan Sports Network, which Mikel helped create in his first year at Taylor, produced over 150 webcasts, highlight videos and video features, while Mikel's staff wrote over 700 press releases ranging from recaps, new hires, features and previews.
In addition to his work at Taylor, Mikel also began his tenure as the Crossroads League SID during the 2016-2017 year. In that role, Mikel handled all media requests for the league, managed the league website, selected the league's weekly awards and created Tournament Central pages for all 15 league championships, which included scores, stats, recaps, live stats, tournament programs and live coverage links.
