UPLAND, Ind. – The Taylor women's golf team opened its 2017-18 campaign on Friday with the first day of the Grant County Cup against Indiana Wesleyan.

The Trojans built a 3-1 lead in the match play event against the Wildcats during Friday's four matches which featured foursome play with each team fielding four two-person teams playing best ball match play at The Players Club at Woodland Trails.

Taylor's sophomore tandem of Maddie Thomas and Alexis Harris combined to claim a 4&3 victory over IWU's Carley LaPlant and Natalie Schulz in the afternoon's first match with Thomas sealing the victory with a birdie on the par-5 15th.

The Wildcats picked up their only victory of the afternoon in the second match with IWU's Shelly Shafter and Hannah Twietmeyer tallying a 5&4 victory of TU's freshman combo of Taylor French and Kacie Gaffney.

The third match of the afternoon proved to be the most exciting with Taylor's Elizabeth Jackson and Grace Elenbaas building a 3-up advantage through seven holes before the Wildcat team of Brooke Fullenkamp and Austina Cansler stormed back to even the match through 14 holes. Elenbaas rolled in a birdie on the par-4 16th hole to give TU a 1-up lead which the Trojans maintained en route to a 1-up victory.

TU's Annie Stimmel and Raquel Helton notched a dominant 4&3 victory over IWU's Annika Harmon and Haley Sikkenga in the final match of the afternoon to give Taylor a 3-1 advantage.

Saturday's final round of matches will feature eight singles matches played at Meshingomesia Country Club starting at 11:00 am.
