UPLAND, Ind. – The Taylor men's golf team claimed a 2.5 to 1.5 lead following the opening day of matches in the Grant County Cup against Indiana Wesleyan on Friday.
Friday's four matches featured foursome play with each team fielding four two-man teams playing best ball match play at The Players Club at Woodland Trails.
The Trojans picked up a decisive victory in the opening match of the afternoon with senior Trey Turner and junior Jeremy Ray teaming up to defeat Indiana Wesleyan's Patrick Hardy and Brent Smith 4&3. The duo combined to make seven birdies and no bogeys in the 15-hole victory.
The afternoon's second match featured Taylor's sophomore duo of Nate Morris and Scottie Marston aginst Indiana Wesleyan's Nick Schad and Ryan Cahill. Morris and Marston built a two-up lead through 16 holes before IWU's Schad tallied birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to erase the lead and earn a halve in the match.
Match three consisted of Taylor's junior Alec Dutkowski and freshman Keegan White against IWU's Drew Cahill and Braydon Schindler. The team of Dutkowski and White totaled seven birdies and no bogeys through 16 holes en route to a 3&2 victory.
Taylor's senior duo of Mitch Lamping and Nick Waskom teamed up to face IWU's Cameron Luczka and Ethan Luecke in the final match of the afternoon. The teams finished the front nine at all square before the Wildcat's won the 10th hole to move 1-up. The Trojans claimed each of the next three holes while the Wildcats answered with three straight wins of their own. Waskom and Lamping each tallied birdies on the 17th hole to square the match before Luecke sealed the point for Indiana Wesleyan with a birdie on the 18th as IWU notched a 1-up victory.
Saturday's final round of matches will feature eight singles matches played at Meshingomesia Country Club starting at 11:00 am.
