MARION, Ind. – The Taylor women's golf team held off a late surge from Indiana Wesleyan to claim a victory in the Grant County Cup on Saturday.
Taylor entered Saturday's eight singles matches with a 3-1 lead following Friday's fourball action and the Trojans did enough to maintain the cushion on Saturday, collected three victories and halving two other matches to tally a 7-5 victory.
The 2017 Crossroads League Newcomer of the Year, TU's Maddie Thomas, led the charge for Taylor with a dominating 6&5 victory over IWU's Carley LaPlant. Taylor also got a pair of 3&2 victories from junior Raquel Helton and freshman Kacie Gaffney.
Sophomore Annie Stimmel won her 17th hole before halving her 18th hole to tally a half point for TU while freshman Taylor French went toe-to-toe with IWU's Shelly Shaffer, erasing a 1-down deficit on the match's 17th hole and added another half point for the Trojans.
The Trojans will return to action next weekend at the Indiana Wesleyan Fall Invitational at Arbor Trace Golf Course on Friday and Saturday.
