UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor will return to Turner Stadium to host Trinity International in a Mid-States Football Association crossover tilt on Saturday night under the lights at 7:00 pm.
SCOUTING TAYLOR: The Trojans have been stingy against the run so far in 2017, ranking No. 3 in the NAIA by holding foes to 34.0 rushing yards per game. TU also ranks No. 16 in total defense, having yielded only 316.5 yards per contest. Matt Nguyen and Tyler Gerig lead the Trojans with a combined 31 tackles.
SCOUTING TRINITY INTERNATIONAL: The Trojans have excelled in pressuring opposing quarterbacks this season, ranking No. 12 in the NAIA with 10 sacks through three contests. Mario Williams leads the attack with three sacks, with Jabial White anchoring the special teams with 19.6 yards per punt return.
LAST MEETING: Saturday will be the second meeting between Taylor and Trinity International in the last four games for TU, after TIU scored a 17-14 win in Upland on Senior Day to close the 2016 campaign. Taylor outgained TIU in the contest but committed three turnovers.
SERIES HISTORY: Taylor and Trinity International have played 15 times previously, with TIU holding a slight 8-7 advantage in the series. The results have favored Taylor of late however, with TU holding a 3-1 record against TIU under 10th-year head coach Ron Korfmacher.
TU'S LAST TIME OUT: Butler scored with seven seconds remaining in the game to take a 27-21 win over Taylor last Saturday. Holden Hodge caught a pair of touchdown passes, while Spencer Crisp rushed 21 times for 85 yards and a go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. Matt Nguyen led the Taylor defense with a career-high 16 tackles.
KORFMACHER NEARING MILESTONE WIN: Taylor's head coach, Ron Korfmacher, enters Saturday's game just two victories shy of matching TU Hall of Famer, Bob Davenport, for the most head coaching victories in program history. Davenport piled up 48 wins from 1957 through 1968 with the Trojans.
HURRICANE RELIEF: The Taylor University Athletics Department is collecting non-perishable food and toiletry items at home football, soccer and volleyball contests during the month of September. All items collected by Taylor during the month will be donated to local charities assisting with the hurricane relief efforts. To read more about this effort, click here.
